The radiation therapy has become very common for the cure of cancer and other diseases. It is done by the specialists known as radiotherapists. The procedure used for this is called as ‘simulation’. In the ‘simulation’, the radiotherapists take the images of the body of the patient with the help of the radiography. Therefore, there is not much damage to the other tissues.
Then the responsibilities of radiation therapists also include deciding the subtype of the radiation therapies to be used. They decide the exposure of the patient to the radiations. However, for this they have to take the help of the radiation oncologist and a dosimetrist. Moreover than the pre-treatment steps the responsibilities of radiation therapists also include monitoring the complete procedure of the radiotherapy.
After the study of the case and then deciding the correct application of the radiation therapy, they are to do the radiation therapy. For the radiation therapy, they position the patient in the right position so that, the radiations can be properly incident upon them.
Then leaving the patient in unconscious state in the radiation room, they control the radiation’s intensity, focus and other factors, with the help of the controls. These controls are outside the radiation room.
The radiation dose can be given for a period of 10 to 30 minutes, once a day. This can be done up to 5 days per week. The responsibilities of radiation therapists include, deciding of the proper format for this.
In addition to this, responsibilities of radiation therapists also include the study of the progress of the patient. During this, he also finds out if any side effects are occurring or not. As the treatment goes on for a long time, they have to keep a track and reports of the therapy.
They should also help guide or relieve the patient from the stress that the patient may face, during the course of therapy.
